About the alignment system

General information

The image alignment system allows the alignment of different non-aligned fundus images taken from the same patient. After registration to Danish Teleophthalmology a user can upload images to the server via the internet. When the images have been aligned the user receives a mail that the aligned images can be downloaded from the Teleophthalmology server.

Security

Transmission of the images is done through a secure server in order to hinder non-authoritized access. For security details, see following.

Registration

In order to become a registered user the following form should be filled out and sent to the web-administrator of www.teleophthalmologi.dk.

Using the routine

The alignment system consists of three parts
  • An upload function for sending fundus images from the user's computer to the alignment program.
  • The alignment procedure.
  • A download function for obtaining the aligned fundus images and a consequent deletion of the images from the Teleophthalmology server.
Maneuvering through the individial parts of the alignment routine is done from the menu at the bottom of the pages.

The menu appears as follows:

[Home] [About Teleoftalmologi] [Users] [Enroll]
Exchange: [Send] [Get] [About]
Alignment: [Send] [Get] [About]

The part of the menu that concerns image alignment is shown below:

Alignment: [About] [Send] [About]

Pressing the right mouse button at About opens this document. Pressing Send opens the upload, and Get opens the download function.

Transmission [Send]

Transmission of series of fundus images is done from a java applet which is the first window that appears when the Send option is chosen from the menu.

The applet appears as follows:

Before a series of fundus images can be sent to the server, two reference points have to be selected in each image. These points are used for the first steps of the alignment procedure.

The following requirements for the images of the series are required:

  • All images should be from the same eye from the same patient
  • All images should cover the same field of the retina
  • All images should be RGB colour and have the same number of pixels vertically and horizontally
  • The size of each image should not exceed 6 Mb
An image is added to the series by pressing in the menu bar to the left.

The following dialogue box appears on the screen:

This dialogue box is used for entering the name of the image file and the two reference points.

The text field to the left should contain the path of the image file. This can be entered from the keyboard, or can be chosen from the file system by pressing

The following file types can be entered into the applet:

  • GIF,
  • TIF,
  • and BMP.
The file select dialogue box can be set to only display one type of image file by choosing this type at the bottom of the dialogue box.

When the relevant file name has been added to the menu til image can be selected by pressing .

The location and name of the image file has then been entered into the dialogue box.

The reference points may either be entered by pressing two coordinate sets (x,y) in the fields, or by pressing the button. This opens the relevant image.

The selection of a reference point is done by moving the mouse pointer to a recognisable location in the retina (e.g. a vascular bifurcation) and pressing the left mouse button. The point will be marked by a circle containing a "1" for the first reference point , and a "2" for the second reference point.

In the following images of the series the same recognisable locations (vascular bifurcations) are marked as reference points.

It is possible to move an already selected reference point by dragging the point using the left mouse button.

When the two reference points have been selected the values are entered by pressing

The selection is accepted by pressing .

Additional images are added by pressing

When the series has been selected, press for uploading to the Teleophthalmology server.

Transmission of the series should be accepted by pressing The transmission may take some time dependent on the band width of the internet connection.

When the series has been uploaded to the server it enters the queue for alignment and is processed in due course. After the alignment job has been finished an e-mail is sent to confirm that the aligned images can be downloaded from the Get page. The time from upload to receipt of the e-mail depends on several factors:

  • The number of images in the series,
  • The size of the images,
  • The number of jobs in the queue.
Additional features:

Save a series on the hard disk for later processing: Press , enter a name of the series, and press for saving.
